RF Microneedling vs Microneedling: What's the Difference?

Both use fine needles, but the addition of radiofrequency energy changes what the treatment does and who it suits.

This guide is general information about treatments at Zazura. It is not individual treatment advice — suitability is always assessed in person at your appointment.

What they have in common

Both treatments use very fine needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin. That controlled injury prompts the skin's natural repair response, which involves producing new collagen over the following weeks and months.

Both are delivered as a course rather than as one-off treatments, and both require the skin to be prepared beforehand and protected afterwards.

Where they differ

Traditional microneedling relies on the mechanical channels alone. RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy delivered at a set depth beneath the surface, introducing a controlled thermal element into the deeper skin.

That thermal component is the reason RF microneedling is often considered where firmness and deeper textural change are the priority, while traditional microneedling remains a strong option for surface texture and overall skin quality.

Downtime and comfort

Both involve visible redness. RF microneedling typically involves slightly more — commonly one to three days, sometimes with mild swelling or a temporary grid-like texture — compared with roughly 24 to 48 hours for traditional microneedling.

Both are performed with topical numbing. Most people describe RF microneedling as warmer and more intense, particularly over bone.

Choosing between them

The honest answer is that this is a consultation decision rather than something to choose from a website. It depends on your skin, the type of concern, your healing tendencies and how much downtime is realistic around your life.
