Laser & light

IPL Photorejuvenation in Durham

Light-based treatment for pigmentation, sun damage, redness and overall skin tone, planned after assessment.

IPL skin rejuvenation uses intense pulsed light to target surface pigmentation and visible redness, helping skin look clearer and more even. Every course at our Durham clinic begins with an assessment and patch test, because IPL is not the right choice for every skin type or concern.

What this treatment is

IPL delivers a filtered spectrum of light rather than the single wavelength used by a laser. Filters are selected so the light is absorbed by the intended target — usually pigment or the blood vessels responsible for redness.

The absorbed light converts to heat, which breaks down excess pigment or reduces the appearance of superficial vessels while leaving surrounding skin intact.

Treatments are delivered as a course, allowing the skin to respond gradually between sessions.

What it may help with

  • Sun damage and photoageing
  • Surface pigmentation and uneven tone
  • Diffuse facial redness
  • Dull skin lacking clarity
  • General skin rejuvenation

When it may not be suitable

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Active infection, broken skin or inflammation in the treatment area
  • Certain medications, including some that increase light sensitivity
  • A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring
  • Some medical conditions or recent procedures affecting the treatment area
  • Recent sun exposure, sunbed use or fake tan
  • Photosensitising medication
  • Active infection or broken skin in the area
  • Some skin tones and pigmentation types, where an alternative is safer

This list is general guidance only. Individual suitability is always determined at consultation, where we review your medical history, medication and skin in person.

How treatment works at Zazura

  • Consultation and skin assessment, including medical history and medication review.
  • Patch test to confirm how your skin responds and to set safe parameters.
  • Eye protection is worn, a cool gel is applied and the handpiece is passed across the area.
  • The skin is cooled and SPF applied before you leave.
  • Progress is reviewed between sessions and the plan adjusted as needed.

Consultation and assessment

A consultation and patch test are required. Some pigmentation needs medical assessment rather than light-based treatment, and we will say so if that applies to you.

What happens at a consultation

During your appointment

Most people describe a quick warm flick, similar to an elastic band, with each pulse. The area may feel warm, like mild sunburn, for a short time afterwards.

Typical appointment time: Around 30–45 minutes depending on the area.

Afterwards

Redness and mild warmth for a few hours are normal. Pigmented spots often darken briefly before flaking away over one to two weeks.

  • Apply a high-factor broad-spectrum SPF every day.
  • Avoid heat, saunas, steam rooms and strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours.
  • Do not pick or scrub darkened spots — let them flake away naturally.
  • Keep skincare gentle until the skin feels comfortable.

Sessions and frequency

A course of three to six sessions spaced a few weeks apart is typical, with occasional maintenance. Your recommended course is confirmed at consultation.

Skin tone usually looks more even and clearer across a course, with a gradual reduction in the appearance of sun damage. Results vary between individuals and depend on sun protection afterwards.

Common questions

What is the difference between IPL and laser?

A laser emits one focused wavelength; IPL emits a filtered spectrum of light. Which suits you depends on your skin type and the concern being treated, and is decided at consultation.

How many IPL sessions will I need?

Most people have three to six sessions spaced a few weeks apart. The number depends on the concern, your skin and how it responds.

Do I need a patch test?

Yes. A patch test is required before your first IPL treatment so we can check your skin's response and set safe parameters.

Is IPL suitable for all skin tones?

No. Suitability depends on your individual skin, and for some skin tones or pigmentation types an alternative treatment is safer. This is assessed honestly at consultation.
